Perhaps the most prominent steam-powered locomotive of MÁV is the so-called "Buffalo", which is still one of the most imposing models of those still in active duty. 517 units had been manifactured between 1924 and 1958, from which 365 were for the exclusive use of MÁV. The 424 had become the most recognized locomotive series of the company. Different exported models were also applied and used by Czecho-Slovakian, Jugoslavian, and Korean railway companies as well.
The 424.009 locomotive was built in 1924 by the MÁVAG in Budapest. It was abruptly transported to Austria in the beginning of 1945 from where it only returned to the MÁV owned networks in 1950. In 1986 it was renovated in the light of the original concept and earned its place in the nostalgia fleet. The locomotive received another reconditioning in 2020.
